Our Story

The analytical capability WISEcode needed didn't exist. So we built it.

WISEcode Labs exists because of a question that should be easy to answer and isn't: what is actually in our food?

Mapping the more than 5,100 ingredients in the American food supply — the Food Genome Project™ — required testing over 4,000 of them across 150+ analytes each, many at detection limits beyond industry standard. No existing lab could do it with the rigor and independence the mission demanded. So we built one.

Purpose-built from day one and independently governed, WISEcode Labs performs every analysis with validated methods and rigorous quality standards. We report only what the science demonstrates — because confidence in food begins with confidence in the science behind it.

Leading with transparency, and collaboration

Fearless Transparency

Complete visibility into your testing — real-time sample tracking, raw data access, and answers from our scientists, not auto-replies.

Relentless Discovery

Measurements taken at detection limits beyond industry standard, backed by validated methods and advanced instrumentation.

Steadfast Collaboration

We’re collaborators, not vendors. Our team works as an extension of yours to help you navigate complex challenges and ship better products.
Our Center of Innovation

Built at the North Carolina Research Campus.

We’re part of a collaborative scientific community in Kannapolis dedicated to advancing human health through nutrition and food science, surrounded by the researchers, universities and industry partners shaping the future of food.
NIST does not evaluate commercial products under this Consortium and does not endorse any product or service used. See Federal Register Notice 89 FR 105535.

Board of Directors

Peter Castleman
Founder, WISEcode
Peter M. Castleman is the founder of WISEcode, a FoodTechAI platform that transforms billions of data points into transparent, personalized Food Intelligence, empowering consumers, brands, and retailers with a definitive way to identify whether a food is ultra-processed. An alumnus of Duke University and the University of Oxford, Peter earned his MBA from Harvard Business School as a Baker Scholar and later taught economics there. He is the author of WISE Up! Ignorance Kills, Truth Heals and Eat to Think, an exploration of the connection between nutrition and cognitive longevity. Peter began his career at J.P. Morgan and at Morgan Stanley's pioneering LBO Group before serving as Managing Partner of J.H. Whitney & Co., the nation's original venture capital firm. Today, he applies that institutional discipline and long-term investment mindset to one of the food industry's most urgent challenges: the absence of a clear, data-driven standard for what is actually in our food. Across four decades, Peter has built and scaled multi-billion-dollar enterprises as an investor and entrepreneur. His work is grounded in a singular conviction: that human health is the ultimate investment, and that better health begins with better inputs.

Sal Siino
Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board, WISEcode Labs
Sal Siino is Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of WISEcode Labs and served as Interim CEO during the laboratory's early growth. He brings a distinctive combination of legal, operating, and investment experience to the company, with a career spanning corporate transactions, public companies, startups, and private investing. Sal began his career as an M&A attorney in New York before moving into senior operating roles at two public media companies. He later entered the startup world as an early executive and co-founder and has since focused on investing and working alongside founders and management teams, serving on boards across a range of industries and stages of growth. At WISEcode Labs, Sal has helped build the company from its earliest days at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis into an independent, ISO 17025-accredited laboratory. He remains closely connected to the principle behind its founding: that better decisions about food require better data, produced with scientific rigor and uncompromising transparency. Sal is a graduate of Georgetown University, the George Washington University School of Law, and Harvard Business School.
